12 Best Female Rock Singers Of All Time

9. Kim Deal - The Pixies

As the alternative scene started to spread out, the conventional structures of bands didn't seem to matter anymore. With no real focus on a major rockstar frontman, boundaries were also smashed down for a female presence to take over, which was seen in acts like Sonic Youth and Talking Heads. Out of all of these bands though, Kim Deal seemed to bring the biggest sonic energy.

Joining the Pixies as their bassist, Deal signed on based on the band's ad looking for someone interested with the sounds of Peter Paul and Mary and Husker Du. Together with songwriter Black Francis, Deal contributed some of the most awe-inspiring performances on Pixies records like on "Gigantic." While she might not taken lead on all of the band's records, it's hard to imagine songs like "Where is My Mind?" without her backing vocals floating overhead.

Even outside of the Pixies, Deal was able to branch out during the 90's with her solo act the Breeders, where she saw great success with singles like "Cannonball." Is she the best musician to come out of the alt-rock scene? Probably not...but the amount of warped emotion Kim Deal was able to put into these classic songs isn't able to be copied.
