12 Best Hard Rock Drum Solos

4. Overkill - Motorhead

Overkill seems to be the most apt title for a Motorhead release. Ever since day one, Lemmy Kilmister's band have always had an unfiltered aggression to their sound that made you feel like they were trying to annihilate you with their music. Though many people talk about the intensity of Lemmy's voice or the incredibly loud guitar tone, the title track from this album was what really got drummers talking.

Long before heavy metal jumped on the train, Phil Taylor was one of the first drummers to bring the double bass drum to the forefront. When it came time to write tracks for the new album, Taylor's new double bass kit had just been installed, and he began to work on it as the band were setting up. By the time the band walked out of the studio, "Overkill" had been written, complete with the perfect drum intro of Philthy pulverizing his new kit.

This song was much more than just a typical rock and roll tune; that drum sound was the sound of the future. Heavy metal drummers from Lars Ulrich to Dave Lombardo have cited this very song as what made them want to play with such precision. Motorhead may not receive as many accolades as other rock giants, but without songs like this, modern rock music would sound completely different.
