12 Best Screamo Metal Bands Of All Time

2. Underoath

Despite only having one founding member left, the current iteration of Underoath has gone down in history as one of the most influential bands in the genre. Starting out in 1997, it took 7 years and a complete line-up change for the band to find success.

2004 saw the release of the groundbreaking 'They're Only Chasing Safety'. The record was certified gold in 2005 and continues to top fans best album lists to this day. Music videos for 'Reinventing Your Exit' and 'It's Dangerous Business Walking out Your Front Door' found themselves in regular rotation on rock TV channels, enabling the group to embark on huge tours across America.

Underoath went on to split in 2013, after the departure of drummer Aaron Gillespie and the poor reception of 'Disambiguation'. Just two years later, teaser footage appeared on the band's YouTube channel, signalling an end to the disbandment. The group later released a documentary, 'Tired Violence', explaining the reason for the split and how they came back together again.

Underoath have long been considered a Christian band. Some of vocalist Spencer Chamberlain's lyrics were rooted heavily in religion and he used his platform to speak about how Christianity helped him through difficult times. Yet controversy struck when the group released their comeback single. Fans were shocked when 'On My Teeth' featured the f-bomb and lyrics seemingly discrediting the religion he used to preach. Speaking out against the fan backlash, members explained that everyone in the band is in a different place with their faith and distancing themselves from the 'Christian' label was a move they felt was appropriate.
