12 Hard Rock Band Members Who Switched Instruments

1. Geddy Lee - Rush

By the time Rush were just starting to get their feet wet, Geddy Lee was already one of the greatest musicians in hard rock. Approaching the bass guitar as if it were a lead instrument, each low end line that Lee contributed made for a rock solid foundation for the rest of the music on top. At the same time, Lee had to take on a few more responsibilities once the band's sound started to shift.

Starting with Fly By Night, the band started to incorporate more sounds into the mix, with everything from synthesizers to chimes to bass pedals occupying a spot on the record. Being a trio, Lee refused to compromise the band's sound when playing live. Instead of setting up a permanent touring member, Lee took it upon himself to learn how to play each instrument live in a concert setting. Though the keyboards ended up having a greater presence on later albums, Lee's bass was still there at the right moment to anchor everything down.

Even up until the band's final tours, you had Lee in front of the stage manning the keyboards, playing bass riffs, singing, and operating bass pedals with his feet within the span of one song. Being one part circus act and one part rock show, Geddy Lee's expertise on multiple instruments is proof enough why Rush is better than the rest.
