3. Bring Me The Horizon €“ Pray For Plagues

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWggPLXeOkU Bring Me The Horizon have morphed into metalcore in their most recent outings, but their first LP Count Your Blessings was much more similar to death metal or grindcore in style. The band has matured since those days, adopting more melodic aspects and toning down the unholy screams of the band's much adored frontman Oliver Sykes. The screaming talent on display in this album is truly something to behold, and while it's not the most original album, it's certainly one that packs a punch. Pray For Plagues opens up proceedings with punchy hooks, stabbing away with pinch-harmonics while a percussive onslaught brings things to a messy crescendo, that's finally swept away with a penetrating growl from Sykes. From there on, the tempo continues to build to a dizzying pace before retreating and going forth again. There are also metalcore breakdowns littered throughout the track, made unique by a blend of thudding drum work and that unimaginably reigned in range of groaning howls and painful screeches that Sykes delivers so dutifully. The song also provides some of Bring Me The Horizon's most mature lyrical work, with smart, biblical references benefitting from the chthonic delivery of Sykes.
