4. Power Trip €“ Manifest Decimation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RttNBc_dcRs Crossover acts are rarely ever this good. Combining elements of hardcore punk and old-school thrash metal, Power Trip deliver a sound that you'd be forgiven for thinking was 30 years old, when instead it was released just last summer. Manifest Decimation is the first full-length album that Power Trip have released, and though their roots on this album are very clear, the execution is unrivalled. The Texas based metal group have built a name around their allegedly outstanding live performances, and are easily one of the strongest thrash revival groups around. The title track is also the album's starting point, and while it's by no means the most oppressive song on this list, it's certainly one of the most potent. Swirling, miasmatic levels of electronic reverb ratchet up the tension before vocalist Riley Gale breaks through with a straining yell that let's you know that the next half hour or so is going to utterly devour you. The track combines the darker elements of thrash metal with straightedge, violent hardcore in a way that calls to mind the likes of Slayer and Cro-Mags. Clean guitars lay waste to the foreground of the soundscape, while warlike, broody percussion blasts away in the background, layered with reverb and driven by Gale's brutish screams. The whole thing convinces you that Power Trip are the kind of band who would rather kick your head in than shake your hand.
