11. The Dillinger Escape Plan €“ Prancer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X01H4icz5aU You can call The Dillinger Escape Plan mathcore, grind-tech, hardcore, math-metal, deathcore or just about any combination of the above, but that only serves to pigeonhole one of the most creative and eclectic groups to emerge from the metal scene in the past two decades. They're a band that have changed a lot over the years, but insurmountable levels of aggression have always been their constant. Their most recent album, One of Us Is the Killer, may not be their most volatile LP, but it packs some of their punchiest songs and is by far their most balanced work. Prancer, the album's opener, enters with erratic, high-pitched guitars that are backed by snappy snare drums, creating a highly kinetic atmosphere that is carried through the entire album. Then in comes Greg Puciato with his throat-shredding screams, quickly cementing his status as a bonafide behemoth of the hardcore world. The track settles down in places, adopting more melodic aspects, but never taking you fully off-edge. When the song does start to sag, the band quickly shifts gears, supplying a new rhythm through a driving bass line.
