12 Most Hated Classic Rock Songs (On Great Albums)
3. My World - Guns N Roses
Guns N Roses' ferocious debut Appetite for Destruction was a shock to the entire music world. Suddenly, the scene in LA changed from men walking around in spandex to the more authentic rock and roll swagger of GNR. Once the band went into the studio again, they proved to have even more aces up their sleeve with the hard hitting one-two punch of the double album Use Your Illusion.
This record showed the band from every musical angle, with ballads like "November Rain" offset with more epic tracks like "Civil War." Even the covers on the record like "Knockin On Heaven's Door" feel practically earth-shattering with their mammoth power. When most were expecting a big grandstand as the finale, "My World" comes on and just makes you feel uncomfortable. This minute long dirge seems to be a bunch of dissonant noise with Axl Rose making vaguely threatening statements towards the listener.
Reportedly, most of the recording for this song was done in a three hour session while Rose was under the influence of magic mushrooms. Given all the fantastic production and attention to detail on the rest of these tracks, this tune makes the album end on a bleak note rather than a triumphant one.
