12 Most Hated Rock Albums Of All Time
7. Pop - U2
At the start of the 90's, U2 had done the near-impossible. After making their definitive masterpiece the Joshua Tree in 1987, the band somehow managed to top it with Achtung Baby, which showed them embracing electronics and separating themselves from their more bombastic tendencies. Though it was a great course correction, things started to go off the rails as the decade went on.
While the band's follow up album Zooropa was a bit of a mixed bag, fans still liked that the band were taking chances with their new sound. However, that electronic sound sure did wear out its welcome by the time they got to Pop, which felt like the band becoming a parody of itself. Instead of having poignant emotions sprinkled in amongst the digital haze, this album practically showed Bono growing more machine than man, with most of the album feeling like it was artificially created using a MIDI synthesizer.
Even the more electronic-leaning fans of the band couldn't stomach this new direction, which led to the band going back to their more classic sound on All That You Can't Leave Behind. It's great to learn from your mistakes, but Pop still remains the one album where everything got out of hand.
