1. KISS
Ever since their inception, KISS was always billed as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. From the way they covered their face in makeup to their gargantuan live show, the band seemed to have all you needed to impress your average rock fan. As time went on though, the "Hottest Band in the World" started to wear out their welcome pretty fast.
That's not to say KISS haven't contributed to the rock landscape in any way. The group's innovations on the live stage have laid the groundwork for shock rockers like Marilyn Manson to thrive today. Though the show is absolutely phenomenal, you sometimes get the impression that the reason it's larger than life is to compensate for the actual incompetence of the songs.
The band's glory years may have spit out a few classics like "Love Gun" and "Deuce," but the majority of the band's catalog is just the sound of any run of the mill rock band with a scary face put on the cover. There's nothing wrong with knowing your market, but in terms of the overarching concept of rock and roll, KISS never really had the song strength to match their personas. The tunes may be great for what they are, but if you stripped away all the gimmicks, we probably wouldn't be talking about KISS as one of the best bands of all time.
