13 Great Songs About Death

3. Evanescence - My Immortal

If you thought the previous entry could muster up emotion through their vocal performance, they ain't got nothing on Amy Lee.

Released as part of 2003's Fallen, this piano ballad describes a loved one dying, but their spirit remaining to the point where it's haunting, and you just want them to leave you alone. Indeed, it's a rollercoaster of emotions that battles on whether or not one wants to (or can) let go of a deceased friend or family member.

Written by then-guitarist Ben Moody, the song initially had no resonance with any member of the band and that Moody wrote an early version of the song whilst still in high school. Lee has elaborated on this, saying "Ben [Moody] tends to write like a storyteller [...] I can't bring myself to write about anything I don't understand completely."

Certified Gold and a staple of their live shows, 'My Immortal' has established itself as Evanescence's second biggest hit, sitting just behind 'Bring Me to Life'. The karaoke favourite has been used for various 'endings' across film and television, including promos for the series finale of Friends as well as the funeral scene in 2003's Daredevil.
