15 Best Death Metal Bands Ever
11. Necrophagia
In comparison to other band's who emerged on the death metal scene at roughly the same, Necrophagia are arguably quite underrated. Forming in 1983, Necrophagia are one of the first pioneering figures of death metal but, rarely enjoy the same praise and credit as other origin bands such as Possessed and Death.
Hailing from Ohio, Necrophagia were initially not a successful band with their initial run as a band lasting just four years. In their first run from 1983-1987, Necrophagia released just one studio album in the form of thier debut record, 'Season of the Dead'. Although a commercial flop at the time, this record has gained popularity over the years and is now seen as a key early death metal record.
Reforming in 1997, the band went through a plethora of quickfire member changes, with a total of 20 different people playing a role in Necrophagia in their second spell as a band. One of these men was Pantera's Phil Anselmo, who appeared as a guitarist in the band from 1998-2001.
Necrophagia disbanded in 2018 following the death of the band's vocalist and only remaining original member, Frank 'Killjoy' Pucci.
