9. Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0H3RlaQVrM Coheed vocalist Claudio Sanchez has a pretty iconic high-pitched wail that many have said they can't get over, despite how much the instrumentation initially draws them in. I always have my eyes firmly fixed on whichever friend or loved one I'm trying to get 'into' Coheed, as when Sanchez' high-pitched tone comes in, it can be a fight-or-flight response. However as any who have stuck with the band over the years know, listening to Coheed after they 'click' with you, is a wondrous and thoroughly engaging experience. With their concept albums being accompaniments to the graphic novel series The Amory Wars (also masterminded by Claudio), there's a whole wealth of emotion and character-driven soundscapes present throughout. Welcome Home opens with one of the heaviest compositions on this list, with a core riff and groove that's positively eye-wateringly brutal, should you not be accustomed with the darker side of life. However come the three-quarter point in the song, when Claudio passionately sings "Please make up your mind, before I hope you DIE!", and a Michael Schenker-style repeating riff comes barreling in, it's a moment that many realised they were going to remain in the Coheed-coaster car for years to come, arms comfortably inside for the duration.
