10. Audioslave - Like A Stone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QU1nvuxaMA Okay hands up, who wants a new Rage Against The Machine album? I mean come on guys, was the ridiculously rapturous applause and overall atmosphere at 2010's Finsbury Park celebratory gig not enough for you to get together and see what happens? Chances are if you announced the previous question over a tannoy with a few thousand in attendance, the resulting arm-flailing would block out the sun. However, whilst Rage have out of action for about a decade and a half, we were treated to Audioslave; the combination of Rage members (minus vocalist Zack de la Rocha), combined with Soundgarden vocal messiah Chris Cornell. I personally think all the Audioslave albums are great, and even though Tom Morello is in full-on mad scientist mode making his guitar sound like a laughing monkey on their last album (seriously, he teaches that section under the name 'The Monkey House'), there are some real gems in those recordings. One such amazing piece of musicianship is the spectral and otherwordly Like A Stone. With Morello soaking his tone in chorus and reverb, he deploys the Digitech Whammy Pedal to make his low E string sound like some strange alien machine kicking into life. The subsequent high notes that come in are truly mesmerising, and cap off this single as an essential addition to any Tom Morello fan's discography. Bring on the new Morello solo album!
