15 Best Heavy Metal Songs Of 2016 (So Far)

5. Deftones - Prayers/Triangles

Deftones have always excelled at making atmospheric, thought-provoking music. Songs like 'Be Quiet And Drive', 'Digital Bath' and 'Change (In The House Of Flies)' are some of their best material, so to their fans delight, the group continued that trend with the lead single from their latest album Gore.

Entitled 'Prayers/Triangles', it is yet another beautiful introspective track from the Sacramento stalwarts. The group likes to keep their lyrical themes ambiguous to the listener but this one is more open lyrically. It is clearly based around some form of torment, with lead singer Chino Moreno yelping lines like "There's a new strange, godless demon awake inside me" or the chorus line "You will never be free", providing context to the unsettled instrumentation beneath it.

Musically this one is perfectly on point; off-kilter drum beats, gorgeous floating guitar lines, probing bass stabs and Moreno's soaring vocal melodies all add up to create an intoxicating blend that implores further inspection from the listener.

Moody yet strangely uplifting, with 'Prayers/Triangles' Deftones yet again shine a light onto their dark dense exterior, only to reveal a vulnerable core at the heart of it. Expertly crafted.
