15 Best Heavy Metal Songs Of 2016 (So Far)

6. Cobalt - Beast Whip

After a seven year split and some inner band turmoil, black metal duo Cobalt came roaring back this year with one of the year€™s best metal records, the colossal double album Slow Forever.

While it certainly contained many highlights, perhaps the ultimate gem is the rolling boulder €˜Beast Whip€™. Starting off with a menacing guitar line before slowing building into a monolithic monstrosity for the verses, the group hurtle forward thanks to a mean riff, thudding bass drums and a maniacal vocal performance courtesy of frontman Charlie Fell.

The track sees the group in pure rage mode as they escalate the sound further and further during its frenzied nine minute duration, before mercifully, collapsing the song in on itself for the devastating finale. Cobalt don€™t miss a beat on this long overdue recording.

Out of nowhere, Cobalt came in to 2016 with renewed vigour and released arguably their finest record to date. Long may this newfound verve continue.
