15 Best Metal Albums Of 2019

3. Saor - Forgotten Paths

Andy Marshall's "Caledonian Metal" has always melded Celtic folk instrumentation and black metal with unparalleled seamlessness and continued this on Forgotten Paths - an album that bursts through your speakers from the very first second, its soaring title track encapsulating all that's great about Saor.

"Epic" is the word to describe Forgotten Paths. Though the aggressive vocals and pounding, driving rhythms keep the sound grounded, this is an almost cinematic journey through Scottish glens, mountain ranges, and heather-filled fields, carried by great melodies and atmospherics. "Monadh" is particularly impressive, and that the harp-driven "Exile" isn't out of place as a closer speaks to Saor's genre-melding power.
