15 David Bowie Songs That Showcase His True Genius
5. Modern Love (1983)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hDbpF4Mvkw David Bowie finally leapt into the mainstream with both feet with 1983's Let's Dance. Bowie ditched long time producer and collaborator Tony Visconti (who had been on board since his second album) in favour of Nile Rodgers, allegedly citing a desire for a "commercially buoyant" sound and hit singles. The newly bouffant Bowie certainly got the hits: the title track was a number 1 hit in the UK and the US while China Girl (a re-recording of a song he'd co-written with Iggy Pop for the latter's The Idiot album) and Modern Love were also commercial successes. It's easy to see why the funky, skittering Modern Love was well received, it's a song with a spring in its step and a grin upon its face, proof that even when Bowie decides to do mainstream pop, he does it better than almost anyone else.
