15 David Bowie Songs That Showcase His True Genius
4. Under The God (1989)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivRtxulMics After the success of Let's Dance, Bowie took the unusual step of playing to the gallery with his subsequent albums. Tonight (1984) and Never Let Me Down (1987) were self-conscious attempts to write for his newly-acquired audience, and although both sold well, they were not beloved by critics and were later dismissed by Bowie as his "Phil Collins" phase. In an effort to move away from his pop reputation, Bowie did what no-one expected and formed a hard rock band called Tin Machine. Unlike The Spiders From Mars, Tin Machine weren't a backing group, they functioned as a democratic unit. Though not that well received at the time or since, Tin Machine's self-titled debut did provide the brilliant rocker Under The God, and helped to purge the memory of Bowie's recent mainstream failures and cleanse the pallet for the 90's, a new decade and a chance for Bowie to try more new things.
