15 David Bowie Songs That Showcase His True Genius
3. The Hearts Filthy Lesson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVgk7wYeZHw David Bowie saw in the 90's by reuniting with old friends. Nile Rodgers produced 1993's Black Tie White Noise, and a reunion with Brian Eno brought about 1995's Outside. A Gothic-themed concept album that includes spoken word interludes, Outside sounds like nothing else either Bowie or Eno had been involved with. It's hard rock is harder than Tin Machine had been, its industrial influences as unexpected as they were a welcome change. The Hearts Filthy Lesson (and yes, the missing apostrophe is intentional) is the best example of Bowie's new, harder edge. At the time critical reaction was muted, at best, but Bowie's 90's albums perhaps deserve a revaluation. It would be some time before Bowie did anything as exciting and different as Outside.
