15 David Bowie Songs That Showcase His True Genius

2. Where Are We Now? (2013)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWtsV50_-p4 It's hard to over sell just how much of a surprise the Where Are We Now? single was when it dropped on the great man's 66th birthday, 8th January 2013. For ten years there had been virtual radio silence from Bowie after his Reality album in 2003. It was the lead single from The Next Day, which followed two months later. The cover was an obvious nod the past - the cover of his classic Heroes with Bowie's head obscured by the album's title. Where Are We Now? Is an elegiac ballad which sees Bowie looking back to his past. For a singer who so frequently relies in personas and difficult lyrics, hearing him sing so openly about "Potsdamer Platz" from his Berlin days was a shock. It was an excellent return for a man many had assumed was retired, and proved that he could still be relevant, even into his sixth decade.
