The album's release was not only unexpected, but also showed that he had more musical moves up his sleeve. Blackstar is a dark art rock album with heavy jazz influences, that has a heavy debt to the avant-garde work of Scott Walker. The title track and single is a near 10 minute opus that really shouldn't work: elements of jazz, electronica and drum and bass sit alongside Gregorian chants and acid house, along with brooding lyrics. It's one of the strangest songs since his 70's heyday, and it's fitting that he should go out a song to prove that he just can't be pigeonholed. Which was your favourite David Bowie song?
