First of all, “Sic Transit Gloria” boasts the best bassline in emo, if not ‘00s rock full stop. The sinister second single was something of a breakthrough for the band, with the vocal lines overlapping and overtaking one another in the verses, leaving no room to take a breath until the tension release of the chorus.

Deja Entendu is somewhat incongruous for an album released in the ‘00s emo boom, wallowing consistently in the darkness, eschewing the glam and power pop influences which some of their contemporaries rode to superstardom.

An album highlight is “Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis”, a slow burning examination of inner turmoil and one of the few indie songs to name check legendary Argentinian forwards. "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" is the closest the album comes to pop, and even here the band are in defiant mode, howling in unison over a hair metal-like riff on the chorus.

Brand New have since disbanded, and for somewhat unfortunate and unsavoury reasons. While many emo bands sing from the perspective of troubled minds, on Deja Entendu it actually sounds legitimate.
