The song is love at first sight, but also the nervousness of blossoming romance as Oberst worries about love having not worked out for him before, but none of that matters anymore because hers is the first face that he saw. The lyrics also confess to knowing that things like love take time, even if it happens at first sight, and problematic past relationships don't mean a thing as Oberst woundedly wonders 'maybe this time is different/I mean I really think you like me.'
