15 Most Distinctive Singing Voices In Rock & Metal

9. David Lee Roth

Rock frontmen don't come much more animated and charismatic than Van Halen's original leading member, David Lee Roth. Though his tenure in the band has seen him come and go numerous times, as well as building a successful solo career in-between, the singer is often seen as the definitive voice of Van Halen, and one of the genre's most unique characters.

During the body of most songs, Roth's vocal style comes off as quite raw and 'shouty', despite maintaining a melodic quality all the way through. Of course, you can't ignore the man's insane vocal range, which he shows off every now and then with a high-pitched squeal to let out some of that boundless pent-up energy.

Perhaps what he's most known for, however, is his jazz-like scatting, which really seems to be the perfect platform for his wired and hyperactive personality. The 1978 song, "I'm The One", is quite possibly the best mixture of all of these styles, making for close to four minutes of pure rock vocal diversity.
