15 Most Distinctive Singing Voices In Rock & Metal

7. Freddie Mercury

There aren't many rock 'n' roll personalities, alive or dead, who are seen in as much of a glowing light as the late Freddie Mercury of Queen. To many, the eccentric moustachioed icon is the epitome of Britishness in music, and the band's most popular songs are universally beloved as timeless classics.

His entertaining stage presence aside, Mercury's powerful and diverse singing voice is what sets him apart from others of his genre. With every member of Queen contributing songs to the albums, the difference in styles gives the singer the perfect excuse to flex his vocal muscles in all sorts of ways.

His own songs, usually gentle and piano-heavy, have him sing in a soft and emotional tone, often venturing into the falsetto range; the more lively songs of Brian May and Roger Taylor, meanwhile, bring out the raw power of his vocal talent, making for pleasingly upbeat anthemic displays of virtuosity.

And let's not forget the theatrical side of Mercury's voice performance, which he explores to an interesting degree in the album, 'Innuendo', and his own solo work, 'Barcelona'.
