2. Superchunk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwDMA_ZqlEQ One of the most consistently wonderful power pop bands of the decade, Superchunk didn't have "that sound" that listeners wanted to hear at the time. They weren't the right kind of 70s throwback. But of the seven albums Superchunk released in the 90s, there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Some of that can be attributed to the band's unwavering indie credentials, resisting major label advances and instead releasing their albums on their own record label. Their sound was aggressively emotional, but it never felt overwrought and it didn't come off as desperate, the way it did with some of the bands Superchunk influenced. And even listening to their classic albums today -- whether it be 1991's No Pocket For Kitty or 1999's Come Pick Me Up -- the melodies still sound fresh. They may be one of the most timeless alternative bands to come out of the 90s.
