15 Most Underrated Hard Rock Albums Of All Time
3. Diver Down - Van Halen
Van Halen's run of albums with David Lee Roth is nothing short of perfection. With each passing record, it seemed that the band were pumping out these hard rock classics like clockwork. Though the band's highlights like their debut or 1984 are rightfully celebrated, their 5th effort Diver Down tends to be marred by its bad production style.
With their label eager to get the album out, all of the songs on this record were made in a rush, with the band resorting to cover songs to fill out the runtime. This kind of production seems tailor-made for the band to phone it in, but the cover songs like Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" work incredibly well, while the band also display some of their most metallic cuts like on "Hang Em High."
In an effort to make the album flow better, Eddie Van Halen actually has many instrumental passages sprinkled throughout the track listing, which do a great job at building mood between the tracks. From the acoustic shredding at the beginning of "Little Guitars" to the volume swells on "Cathedral," even Van Halen's more uninspired experiments ended up being enough for countless guitarists to dissect. Diver Down may not have been a pleasant record to make, but there are much more hits than misses than you probably remember.
