15 Most Underrated Hard Rock Singers EVER

9. Serj Tankian - System Of A Down

Serj Tankian's voice has been described in a variety of different ways. While some say it's a new departure for the metal genre, others tend to think his almost-nasal delivery is one of the biggest things holding him back. Regardless of what the mass consensus thinks, Tankian's vocals are a big part of what makes System of a Down so different.

When System first broke onto the scene, more off-the-wall vocals were nothing new, with Korn fashioning themselves behind Jonathan Davis's growl. On the other hand, System's approach to vocals gave the band an advantage because of Tankian's harshness. Even if it sounded weird to hear him emphasizing every word, the actual condemnations on display left many hard rock fans stunned. Instead of being another run-of-the-mill metal band singing about death, Serj's approach made you pay close attention to what was actually being said.

Combined with the vocals of guitarist Daron Malakian, the band created a completely different sonic landscape as their voices cascaded against one another's. You may have turned on "Chop Suey!" just to headbang, but the outro's harmonized chorus will leave any musician awestruck. System may have had politics at the forefront of their music, but when it comes to vocals, they always understood that the actual MUSIC came first.
