One of the key components that separates Cavalera from the rest of the metal scene is the embracement of his musical heritage of Brazil. Roots by Sepultura in 1996 was heavily indebted to the unique instruments of their native land and Cavalera has carried that tradition on throughout his career.

He combines different instruments from different styles of Brazilian music like the berimbau which is commonly associated with the sport of capoeira, the alfaia drums mainly found in the Brazilian dancing of maracatu, Brazilian wood acoustic guitars and a whole host of other variants from the country helping to flesh out the overall sound.

As much as electric guitars and howling vocals make up the work of Cavalera, just as much indebted to it are the ancient Brazilian instruments that permeate so much of his music. This is one part of his music that the fans have come to know and love.
