1975: 10 Songs You Need To Hear Before Their New Album Drops
7. The Ballad Of Me And My Brain
We move onto the band's second album now - the ludicrously-named I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It.
Gross.
The album is an absolute delight (despite its stupid name) and, even if you know the singles, there are plenty of album tracks to sink your teeth into.
One such tune is "The Ballad Of Me And My Brain".
The song jokingly puts into perspective the mental health issues associated with being famous. Matty's hoarse yell informs us that he's misplaced his brain (as you do), so he can't sign an autograph for your daughter. Well, what he actually says is much ruder, but kids read this, so.
The playful lyrics - "I searched all day it drove me insane/Where would I be if I was my brain?" - hide a serious message that resonates very strongly with The 1975's core audience.
The music on this song is also fantastic. Driving drums and a cacophony of distorted guitar accompanies the incredibly powerful vocals, all whilst an angelic choir hums in the background.
Slightly messy, endlessly interesting, and a lot of fun, this track is the band to a tee.
