1975: 10 Songs You Need To Hear Before Their New Album Drops
3. Be My Mistake
Immediately following "Love It If We Made It", we have this - a slow, mournful acoustic guitar song about a musician who is unfaithful to his partner whilst on the road.
Inspired by the work of Nick Drake, "Be My Mistake" is utterly heartbreaking. The man in this song is awful to both his partner - "She bought me those jeans/The ones you like." - and his new lover - "Don't wait outside my hotel room/Just wait till I give you a sign". But, at its core, is that most human of weaknesses - loneliness
In an interview with Pitchfork, Matty said "“Be My Mistake” is just about guilt. It’s about when you are a young person and you struggle sometimes to figure out what you really want. And sometimes, like a lot of things, it requires you to make a mistake before you actually understand what you have."
The 1975 have a knack for really speaking to their audience and this song whispers dreadful thoughts directly into their ears. Romantic temptation is something we've all battled with and you'd be lying if you said that wasn't true.
Matty doesn't lie about these feelings, but he doesn't apologise for them either.
Spot on.
