20 Exquisitely-Produced Songs That MUST Be Played Loud As Hell
6. Arcade Fire "Wake Up"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zdNdjF-htY Any track from last year's "Reflektor" could have had a slot on this list. The album is masterfully produced by LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy, and every song has sonic marvels that are only revealed by listening to the album with headphones on and the sound turned up. When many think of Arcade Fire, though, they think of "Wake Up"; the emotional centrepiece from the Canadian band's universally adored debut, 2004's "Funeral" - it just sounds like growing up. The tearful choral refrain is the song's ballast, but an emotionally ricocheting vocal from frontman Win Butler is what truly earns the song the "maximum volume" designation. Butler sings with reckless abandon throughout, guiding his band through an orchestral wallop of a song. Perhaps the most impressive thing about it is that Arcade Fire produced it on their own, capturing a balance between the communal grandiosity of an arena rock show and the yearning ache that accompanies a wistful look back in time.
