20 Greatest Alternative Albums Of 2016

5. Iggy Pop – Post Pop Depression

Recorded in secrecy and self-financed, legendary garage rocker Iggy Pop dropped this super tight LP onto an unsuspecting public in 2016. On Post Pop Depression, he sounds revitalized thanks to a re-jigged line-up that features none other than Queens Of The Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Arctic Monkeys stickman Matt Helders, with the former also on production duties.

Homme keeps the production stripped back, allowing the instruments to be the focal point. It’s wonderfully laid back at points, but switches into more tense numbers on a whim – a fine line that the eccentric singer walks on for the album’s duration.

More importantly, Post Pop Depression is an extremely concise piece of work. There’s no fat, just super lean meat on the bone. Notable examples of this include the bewitching rocker 'Break Into Your Heart', the slinking beauty 'Gardenia' and the understated powerhouse 'Sunday.'

A return this good deserves the plaudits that will no doubt be rained down upon it. Most intriguingly, this fantastic LP will surely set out a blueprint for future records, proving that there’s still plenty of fire left in the belly of this rock icon.
