20 Greatest Alternative Albums Of 2016
6. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Dissociation
As with our number nineteen entry, guitar manipulator Ben Weinman notches up another place on the list, this time with his main group The
Dillinger Escape Plan. Sadly, this is the last album that the band will
make, but they make sure to go out kicking and screaming from the first second to the last.
As with their previous stellar work, the four-piece achieve more here in one song than some bands do in a full-length album. As it's their final record, they ensure no stone is left unturned, delving further into their greatest inspirations like Faith No More, Deftones and even Slint, while still sounding very much Dillinger.
Vocalist Greg Puciato screams with throat-tearing vocal velocity for much of the LP, reaching frantic heights on the fittingly chaotic opener ‘Limerent Death’, the off-the-rails brainstorm 'Wanting Not So Much To As To' and the vicious rip-roarer 'Surrogate.' Faced with the daunting task of producing a fitting swansong, the influential mathcore outfit shatter any idea of this record not being anything less than great.
No band in metal can muster up the same frenetic energy as this future hall of fame act, and with Dissociation, they bow out in the only way they know how – schizophrenic destruction on an unparalleled scale.
