https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d8C4AIFgUg The much-loved, much-covered anti-war song just hits the nail square on the head. 'War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing', says Starr, in two short sentences that say so, so much. Perhaps the people at the top should have a listen to this Motown anthem every once in a while, especially when they're feeling a little bit cranky. The blatant anti-Vietnam war song, written by Norman Whitfield, was originally released as a single and sung by Edwin Starr, though there was also an unreleased take, performed by The Temptations. The song's power was reasserted when Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took their rendition into the U.S. Top 10 in 1986. It was also covered by the massively popular Frankie Goes to Hollywood. This track works best though when sung by Starr, a thumping, beat-heavy Motown tune to get feet moving and people singing. You won't find a Motown classics compilation that doesn't feature this certified floor-filler.
