5. Something The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrYb4HQY5rQ Another mighty classic that keeps popping up in all time love song lists and rightly so. Reputed to be written about George Harrison's then partner, Patti Boyd (who was also the muse for 'Layla' by Eric Clapton, who she certainly left George for) this is a story of being spellbound and almost rendered inarticulate by love. 'Something' is the greatest love song The Beatles ever wrote, and whilst that seems like a bold statement, lets consider the context first. This was arguably the greatest band of all time, supposedly at the peak of their powers, but they divorced as a group soon after they recorded this. The lovely film they put together tell the stories of the partners they were with, and having written so many songs about love, I think that the reason that they let George finally release a single which ironically, was the first one in aeons that didn't reach number 1 - was that he'd written about something they all related to, love is more important than anything else, even than being in the biggest band of all time. But let's not forget about the grandeur of the song itself, this is a man who is speechless with awe, trying put his love into words but falling short, so George Harrison's trick was to write music that perfectly articulated how he felt. And that's why this song is still played by lovers over and over again, and always will be.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
