18. I Was Made For You - She & Him
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnwNq3nHURg On first listen you'd never know that this wasn't recorded at least 50 years ago. This is a lovely, light and breezy song about longing and love at first sight. It sounds like The Ronettes with Roy Orbison on guitar and June Carter on vocals. This is also proof that love songs don't have to be earnest declarations of devotion they can also be all about fun, frivolity and the happy acceptance of fate. So what's the story here? Well, 'I was made for you' is the tale of a girl who one day suddenly sees the boy of her dreams, and as soon as he smiles at her that seals the deal - as far as she's concerned, they're meant to be together. Like other songs here it's saying love can actually be a very simple thing, it doesn't have to be over-complicated and this song tells that story wonderfully, both with the words and the music. And great love songs should, if possible, abide by the following criteria, which is that they can be played at a wedding. You can imagine grandparents, grandchildren and the bride and groom dancing and celebrating romance with this as the backing track. A lovely story of the simplicity of love, simply told.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
