20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time
18. Black Mountainside - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin's debut record was a sonic force to be reckoned with when it was first released. Not only did it showcase some of the best musicians on the British blues scene, but also signaled the rise of one of the greatest hard rock bands the world had ever seen. It's hard to think that anything on the record is underrated, but the instrumental from Jimmy Page is a lot more adventurous than it is given credit for.
Arriving at the midway point of the record, "Black Mountainside" might not be the heaviest song Led Zeppelin has to offer, but it does hint at more epic things to come. From the strange open tuning Page used to record the piece to its Eastern rhythmic structure, this song started a trend of Zeppelin going into more exotic territory on their records. This opened the door for different song structures along with certain instruments we would see later on like the mandolin on "The Battle of Evermore."
With the Beatles and the Stones already utilizing Eastern influences, Zeppelin was the one band who took those adventurous melodies into the world of hard rock. It might not be a highlight next to songs like "Dazed and Confused," but without a song like "Black Mountainside," we probably wouldn't have been given songs like "Kashmir" later.
