20 Most Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of All Time
3. Supersonic - Pearl Jam
After a slew of experimental albums, fans were starting to wonder if Pearl Jam had lost their way. Across albums like Binaural and Riot Act, the band had forsaken their abrasive sound for something a lot more mellow and short on concise hooks. Once we got a helping of 2009's Backspacer, one of the greatest bands of the 90's came screaming back to life.
While many people single out the song "The Fixer" as the emblematic song of this period, "Supersonic" is the sound of Pearl Jam at their most pure. Set to a driving hard rock rhythm, this song sounds like a long forgotten tune from a band like the MC5. Rather than putting heavy lyrics to the basic track, Eddie Vedder spends the song talking about music being the salvation to all of the problems he encounters. Right when everything comes to a halt, Mike McCready takes center stage to deliver some of the most brilliant off-the-cuff guitar licks of his entire career.
By stripping everything back to canvas, Pearl Jam came out with a sound that was so much more organic than what they had been trying for the past few years. While not as punchy as something like "Even Flow," this song is Pearl Jam settling into their elderstatesmen phase with garage rock bombast.
