20 Most Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of All Time
2. Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist - Muse
Ever since Muse began, their music always felt like it was being played from another world. Rather than your typical song structures, every one of the band's tracks were sweeping epics with an off-kilter weirdness inspired by space rock. While many single out their third record Absolution as their best, "Thoughts of a Dying Atheist" seems to be marginalized far too often.
Centered around a descending lick from Matt Bellamy, the entire track details a man who is watching himself die and wondering where he is going to land in the afterlife. On the surface, it seems like a pretty dour topic, but the way these guys perform on the track is much more celebratory than you might think. Whereas most of the record had them pulling from more ethereal soundscapes, this song is Muse by way of glam rock, complete with a singalong "yeah yeah" ending for the chorus.
Muse could have easily gotten by with writing another by-the-numbers dystopian song, but their willingness to experiment with other styles made a song that sounded like David Bowie if he really was from outer space. It's not going to replace a song like "Hysteria" in the band's setlist, but this song is one of the greatest pop-centric tunes Bellamy and co. have ever offered up.
