During the Spring of the year 2000 the Gwen Stefani led rock group released Return of Saturn. By this time the California rock faction was five years removed from their breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom, and continuing to thrive in the world of mainstream rock.
Despite this, No Doubt was not content to simply repeat the same formula that had brought them to the forefront of their genre. The 4th studio album switched up the approach and traded in much of the ska and reggie influences for a darker ballads. The risk paid off with the album being positively received, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and earning a nomination for best rock album at the 43rd Grammy awards.
In addition to album's success as a whole, Return of Saturn produced a quartet a singles. "Bathwater", "Simple Kind of Life" "New" and "Ex-Girlfriend" each boasted success as individual tracks with the latter pair making their way into the top ten of the Billboard Modern Rock charts.
