20 Unsigned Metal Bands Everyone Needs To Hear
4. Raised By Owls
Raised By Owls is the funniest comedy rock band since Tenacious D.
In the band's own words, they are "an extreme metal band spawned from the depths of England to cause a mild disturbance and then apologise shortly afterwards". Releasing their 45-minute-long debut EP, The Great British Grind Off, in 2016 (which is, by the way, not only one of the best EPs of the year, but also available FOR FREE on their Bandcamp page), Raised By Owls is a hilarious metal parody of all things British.
With song titles ranging from "Harry Potter and the Curse of the Student Loan" to "Ainsley Harriott Advises You to Give Your Meat a Good Ol' Rub" to "An American Werewolf in Bognor Regis" to "Practising Black Magic with Bruce Forsyth", any English metalhead has to hear this band.
One of the biggest faults of modern comedy rock bands is usually that the humour overtakes the music. As much as I love Steel Panther, for example, I'll be the first to admit that their music by itself is far from ideal. But at the same time, that's all part of the appeal.
Meanwhile, Raised By Owl's harsh, punchy and extreme music is strong enough to hold its own, with the humour of their lyrics just adding an extra layer of awesome.
Everything about this band is ingenious and bordering on the ludicrous. And that's what metal is all about.
