21 Best Punk Albums Of The 21st Century
4. Reuben - Racecar Is Racecar Backwards
In the earlier entry relating to 'Muscle Memory' by Jamie Lenman, we told you to remember Reuben for later. Well, this is why.
The cult classic British punk trio had a relatively short lived stint under the central gaze of the UK alternative scene, arriving in 2004 and disbanding in 2008. Yet, their reputation and counter culture legacy remains as strong as ever. Forming in 1998, the group didn't release their first official studio material until the 'Pilot' EP in 2001. Although the EP went under the radar for the most part, it set the foundations for Reuben's debut album, 'Racecar is Racecar Backwards', in 2004.
In any context this album is absolutely astonishing. But the fact it was a debut album, recorded on a brand new British indie label in Xtra Mile, coupled with the expectation from the band that it would be their only record, makes it an almost otherworldly accomplishment. The single 'Freddy Krueger' even reached #53 in the UK's singles chart, acting as a true testament to the effort Reuben put into this uphill battle against the British music industry.
This record is simultaneously one of the most complete and underrated punk albums of the 21st century, perhaps even ever. Top songs featured include 'Parties Break Hearts', 'Horror Show', 'Our Song' and the lead single, 'Let's Stop Hanging Out'.
