Even back in the 80's, Lars Ulrich was causing mischief.

The story goes that one Ron Quintana (Lars' friend at the time) was starting a metal fanzine in San Francisco, coming up with the 'Metallica' title to use himself. Lars reportedly then suggested something else for Quintana to use, knowing Metallica just had the right ring to it, stealing it for both him and James to use going forward.

Hetfield on the other hand only brought with him the name 'Phantom Lord', the name of his High School band, which after switching to Metallica still made an appearance as a song on the debut Kill 'em All, becoming one of the most ferocious songs in their discography.
