You'd think that given Pete Townshend's curious penchant for destroying guitars that he wasn't particularly fond of them, but the frenzied pay-off was the perfect pay-off to his style.

Not only did he basically invent the power chord, he was also one of the first to use feedback as a soloing technique and it is truly stunning to see the contradiction of his furious playing style and stage persona and the rich melodies and tone of his songs.
