One of the great tragedies of rock music, Vaughan's early death in 1990 in a helicopter crash after a show with Eric Clapton robbed the world of one of its finest ever blues guitarists. His genius was very much an unknown thing in the mainstream when he was active: the rise of MTV pushed blues away to the boundaries but his ability demanded attention, and he got it from his peers.
