13. Everything In Its Right Place

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZZnKmzkU04 Artist: RadioheadAlbum: 'Kid A'Year: 2000 Legend has it that Radiohead could only agree on one thing, shortly after the recording of 'Kid A', and that was that 'Everything In Its Right Place' should open the record. And it's easy to see why. The last time fans heard the band, they were drifting asleep in the back of a taxi, ambling towards the horizon, guitars still clutched under their arms. They could've been the next U2, bigger even, and 'The Tourist' felt so much more of a farewell to the 'OK Computer' sound, than a funeral. Let's face it: we could've forgiven them for writing another record in a world that they so meticulously constructed. 'Everything In Its Right Place' though, is a brilliant stick of a dynamite, lodged in any preconception you had of the band. It's a plaintive keyboard chassis, packed with a barely human Yorke lamenting the new millennium through the lemon he's sucking. It's both infectious and funereal, and all these years on, it's hard to imagine those five blokes, fresh from 1997's heady heights, ever turning into anything other than this mercurial riddle of a band.
