25 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Of The Last Decade
19. Meek Mill - Championships
Following a brief stint in jail, many wondered how a Meek Mill record would sound when he returned. Would the Philadelphia rapper still have the same level of intensity he had on previous albums or had he simmered down while put away? Luckily for us, his 2018 album, Championships, proved that not only did he still have his incredible intensity, he had also developed a maturity we had never seen before.
Meek sets the tone of his album from his first song, aptly titled "Intro". Sampling "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, he lets rip over the three-and-a-half-minute song. There's no chorus on it at all. All he needs is one, lengthy, impactful verse to let everyone listening know that he's back to his very best.
While it's fantastic to see Meek fire off bars with his trademark passion, it's far more interesting to watch his growth following his time away. We get all the usual chatter from him on this album, but songs like "Trauma" and "Oodles o' Noodles Babies" show that he can put away his battle rapper style and be more introspective and talk about social problems. Championships proved to not only be a return to form for Meek, it also showed that he's better than ever.
