25 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Of The Last Decade
18. Vince Staples - Summertime 06
There are plenty of rappers keeping the West Coast scene alive at the moment, but none are more underappreciated than Vince Staples. The 26-year old Compton MC has quietly put together a rather impressive discography of music, which includes his debut album Summertime '06.
A double album that lasts just under an hour, Summertime '06 does a brilliant job of introducing you to Vince Staples and his life so far. For someone so young, he's extremely honest and mature on his debut, oozing with the confidence of a rapper who had been around far longer. What's even more impressive is that it doesn't feel like he's copying anyone else. The album is very much a unique experience coming from an even more unique perspective.
Tracks like "Norf Norf" and "Senorita" have a beat that will make you nod your head in enjoyment, but if you listen a little closer to Staples' lyrics, you'll realise that if he's not a scary individual himself, he's able to paint a vivid enough picture of his experiences that it makes him seem like one.
